A selection of Cat's hoop event workshops
Cat's travelling workshops are designed to increase movement, dance and flow with your hula hoop.
“The hallmark of flow is a feeling of spontaneous joy, even rapture, while performing a task.” (Goleman.D., 1996 Emotional Intelligence, London: Bloomsbury Publishing)
Although extensive research has been published on ‘flow concept’, flow within hoop dance can mean different things to different people; a state of oneness with the hoop, a fluidity of movement, an out of mind experience. Ultimately, what it means to us is more free and enjoyable hoop play.
Inhale, exhale.
We will focus on breath and movement, our hula-hoop dance both leading and being led by our breath. Cat will encourage you to move by setting exercises to follow - enough structure to help you comfortably break through movement barriers and learned behaviour. Let's shift the focus from trick 'perfection' and unlock different ways of moving. Suitable for all levels - you just need to listen and let go. It's your dance.. so do it your way. Bring a hoop light enough for free movement, an open mind and a quiet tongue, for this meditative movement session.
Connectives
Often in hooping we are concerned with the next big trick and the satisfaction in nailing a complicated trick is hard to beat. However, we can become so concerned with trick perfection that the hooping that joins these tricks together is ignored. Hoopers can become ‘stuck’ and find transitioning between tricks difficult or impossible or find it hard to break out of set sequences. This workshop aims to increase the enjoyment of the ‘connectives’ within our hoop dance. It will include set exercises that will help the hooper towards achieving a state of flow. Whether you are an accomplished trick technician or at the start of your hoop experience, this workshop will benefit all.
Coalesce
We love hula hooping.. but how often do we lose patience with our hoop or ourselves trying to learn a new move? This workshop is designed to strengthen the emotional bond between you and your hoop through the exploration of the physical bond. We leave behind the pressures of how we look and what tricks we can do and trust in our senses. Focusing on the contact points between you and your hoop, Cat will lead you through a series of exercises to encourage a feeling of partnership and reciprocity.
Meld
Following on from the hugely popular 'Coalesce', Cat has taken some elements forward and inward to create 'Meld', a continuation of our hoop partnership journey. Working with our physical partners - both friends and hoops - we will deepen our connection between our hoop and our movement. We will focus on whole body movement and involving little used or 'redundant' areas in our hoop dance.
Elemental
Stuck in a rut? Feel the need to work on your 'flow'? Want to create moves? Want to work on your personal style? The sum of all the elements, your body and your response to your environment is a unique package. Quintessentially you. We will use the power of music, breath and the elements to create magic within your personal hoop repertoire. Bring your favourite hoop, a couple of moves, a pair of earplugs and an open mind!
Inner sanctum (n): the most sacred place in a temple; a private place to which few other people are admitted.
Brace yourself people, we’re going… ON BODY. I know, radical, right? In this workshop we will push the boundaries of core hooping and delight in the inner space of our hula hoop. What you will need: Yourself and your favourite hoop.. maybe a choice of two, but whatever you feel comfortable with. We will be spending some time on body with the focus on your movement, so if this means a larger heavier hoop, please bring one.
Cat has taught weekly Starter to Advanced hula hoop classes since 2010 and therefore has an incredibly wide repertoire. The workshops detailed on this page are not an exhaustive list and therefore if you require a particular type of class content, please contact Cat to arrange. Cat will deliver workshops to fit your event, in her own unique style.
